MadMicrobe partnered with leading researcher Prof. Alexey Amunts to bring his team’s landmark Nature paper to life. We transformed complex cryo-EM data into a stunning 3D animation that reveals the surprising role of the respiratory supercomplex in shaping the cell’s mitochondrial architecture, creating a visual narrative designed to amaze and delight.

Mitochondrial Supercomplex
- CLIENT: Dr. Alexey Amunts (Stockholm University, Max Planck Institute for Molecular Physiology)
- PROJECT: Scientific Animation for a Landmark Research Paper
- DELIVERABLES: 3.5-Minute 3D Animation, Scriptwriting,
Professional VO, SFX & Music, Open Artwork Files - TIMELINE: 12 weeks
THE BRIEF
Following their groundbreaking research publication in Nature, Dr. Alexey Amunts’ team needed a powerful visual tool to explain their findings. The goal was to create a high-impact animation illustrating how a respiratory supercomplex actively shapes the “intricate architecture of the inner mitochondrial membrane,” making the discovery accessible to a global audience at conferences and on digital platforms.
THE CHALLENGE
The core challenge was translating experimental cryo-EM and tomography research data into an accessible and impactful animation. We needed to ensure flawless scientific accuracy of available atomic models, conformational changes and electron density maps of partial states while distilling the extreme complexity of a dynamic 5.8-megadalton supercomplex comprising ~300 individual biological components into a clear, compelling narrative. The animation had to bridge the scales of atomic models with molecular function from biochemical data and cellular architecture, telling a memorable story about how this machine shapes the bioenergetic membrane.
OUR APPROACH
- SCIENTIFIC ACCURACY: We ensured flawless accuracy through a close, collaborative partnership with the client, using their actual cryo-EM data as the direct blueprint for our 3D models.
- NARRATIVE CLARITY: We designed a “cinematic journey,” guiding the viewer from a single cell to the molecular level and using elegant visual metaphors to deconstruct the complex process into a clear story.
- AUDIENCE ENGAGEMENT: We applied high-end animation techniques—dynamic camera work, atmospheric lighting, and a custom soundscape—to create an immersive experience that brings the audience into the discovery itself.
THE RESULT
The result is a powerful communication tool that successfully translates a landmark Nature paper into a dynamic and memorable animation. The video provides Prof. Amunts’ team with an invaluable asset to share their discovery with audiences from fellow scientists to the general public. The project stands as a testament to MadMicrobe’s ability to transform dense data into a scientifically accurate visual story that is clear, compelling, and purposeful.
“MadMicrobe transformed our complex research data across scales into a seamless visual narrative that captures both the intricacy and elegance of mitochondrial architecture. The animation not only conveys our discovery with clarity, but also integrates structural and biochemical data to create an educational resource now used in university lectures and research seminars. Their commitment to scientific accuracy, advanced visualization techniques, and instinct for storytelling resulted in a spectacular animation about mitochondria that contributes to research, education, and science popularisation.”
