MadMicrobe partnered with Prof. Alexey Amunts at the Stockholm University, Max Planck Institute for Molecular Physiology, to visualize a fundamental biological process: how messenger RNA is delivered to the mitochondrial ribosome. We transformed complex structural data into a dynamic animation, creating a clear and compelling story that reveals the intricate pathway of protein synthesis.

Threading the Mitoribosome
- Client: Prof. Alexey Amunts (Stockholm University, Max Planck Institute for Molecular Physiology)
- Project: Scientific Animation of a Molecular Mechanism
- Deliverables: 2-Minute 3D Animation, Scriptwriting, Professional VO, SFX & Music
- Timeline: 12 weeks
THE BRIEF
Following their detailed structural analysis of the mitoribosome, Prof. Amunts’ research group needed to clearly illustrate a key process in action: how newly-made mitochondrial mRNA is protected, shuttled, and threaded into the ribosome’s decoding center. The goal was to create a scientifically flawless animation for use at major congresses, in publications, and across digital education platforms.
THE CHALLENGE
The primary challenge was to visualize a complex and crowded molecular journey that was previously only understood through static data. We had to clearly depict the precise, sequential interactions between a single mRNA strand and numerous specific proteins within the massive mitoribosome. The animation needed to build a cohesive narrative around this pathway, making an invisible and intricate process easy to follow and understand.
OUR APPROACH
Our approach was to translate complex scientific data into an intuitive and compelling visual narrative. This was achieved by focusing on several key areas:
- DATA-DRIVEN: We ensured an authentic representation of the science by working in close collaboration with the authors and using their structural data as the direct blueprint for our 3D models.
- DECONSTRUCTING COMPLEXITY: We made the intricate process easy to follow by creating a clear visual pathway, using strategic labels for key proteins, and visualizing invisible forces like electrostatic charge with elegant color-coding.
- BRINGING THE SCIENCE TO LIFE: We transformed a static model into a living machine by animating dynamic elements, such as the opening of the “uS9m gate,” creating a memorable journey that makes the mechanism both understandable and impactful.
THE RESULT
The final animation successfully demystified a fundamental process in molecular biology. It provides Prof. Amunts and The Max Planck Institute with a powerful, reusable asset to communicate their research with clarity and impact. The project showcases MadMicrobe’s expertise in translating dense scientific data into a visual story that is accurate, educational, and compelling for any audience.
